Philadelphia Musicians Keep Suburban Station Travelers On Track

February 6th, 2009

It’s four o’clock on Friday and the click-clack of freshly shined shoes and black leather pumps pound the pavement in four-four time.

As trains roll in and out of Suburban Station at 15th and John F. Kennedy streets, commuters bustle by in hopes of catching an early train. Their focus is tight on the overhead digital boards reading off their train’s arrival and departure.

Five minutes late.

Their disappointment is as apparent as it is fleeting as it is quickly wavered by a thumping bass and rat-a-tat-tat of a snare drum.

Every day I look forward to the unknown music of the Concourse,” says Mary Louise, 46, a Market East train rider. “It’s a real treat, and always a surprise.” Louise, a Comcast Center employee says she enjoys the walking from the Comcast Center through Suburban Station to the Market East rail line on her daily commute home.

Always Low. Always Walmart.

November 29th, 2008

According to CNN.com, “a temporary Wal-Mart employee was trampled to death in a rush of thousands of early morning shoppers as he and other employees attempted to unlock the doors of a Long Island, New York, store at 5 a.m., police said.”

Though charges have not, and reportedly will not be filed on customers who trampled the employee–customers at the front of the line were forcefully pushed by those in the back of the line, and it will be impossible to identify those in fault by surveillance footage–is it outrageous to feel that charges SHOULD be filed against corporate giant and proverbial “black friday fat cat”, Walmart? World Series Champions - Philadelphia Phillies

November 20th, 2008

After 25 years, the Philadelphia Phillies brought home a World Series win–in a quite unconventional series, a la rain delay–and became the 2008 world champions. Luckily, the young team managed to survive the celebration and the massive uncontrollable parade from 20th and Market to Citizens Bank park attracting over 2 million Philadelphia and suburban fans.

These photos were taken at Broad and Snyder where we managed to get to the second row for some heavy screaming, fog-horn blasting and confetti snowstorms.

Apocalypse Wow!

October 16th, 2008

After the 2008 Election and the unfortunate “McCain virus” outbreak that led to that pesky zombie apocalypse, a recently undead Temple University magazine student took full entrepreneurial advantage of the new and ready to consume immortal demographic!Apocalypse Wow! targets male immortals, specifically the ever-growing zombie population. These guys have a whole new flesh-rotting body they’ll need to get used to, a disposable income, penchant for rancid meat and a pretty tough time with the zombie ladies now that they’re touch is about as gentle as a fatal shotgun blast to the head. Thus, the need for a men’s magazine that will show them the way! The Apocalypse Wow! reader is  quite possibly the perfected magazine consumer since the typical AW zombie has a huge entourage–always plodding in tow–significantly increasing the pass-along rates of  the magazine. Most of all, these subhuman flesh-feasters love to consume and they’ll never, ever die. Ahhh, the ideal magazine reader and the only hope left for magazines…

Phantom Paradise - a photo story

September 24th, 2008

Unforgiving sidewalks and the blank faces of soaring skyscrapers can leave city dwellers longing for the solace of combing endless apple fields and raspberry bushes. For a brief afternoon, they’ll  take their minds off of the price of gas, the energy crisis, the economic devastation, and think solely about going green.

W[a]nderful?

September 12th, 2008

Written - March, 2005 (an older piece I dug up based on an actual phone-call. Think Arthur Hope - The Greatest Generation-esque)

Sitting in a diner I was quite confused when I noticed an advertisement on the placemat. I just couldn’t understand what it meant. Since the number was there and I couldn’t concentrate on anything else accept for the fact that this advertisement wrongfully spelled wonderful with an ‘A’ (wanderful) for no apparent reason…

Me: Hi I was just sitting in a restaurant and I noticed your advertisement on the placemat and I was wandering why you spelled wonderful wanderful…

Steve Forman: Well I just like to do things different that’s all.

Me: I see. But what is the significance of it?

Steve Forman: There is none I just like to do things different.

Me: Be original huh?

Steve Forman: That’s right. I like to be creative.
